Citizen's Academy...

The purpose of the Citizen’s Academy is to provide the citizens of Danville with a better understanding of the capabilities of the Danville Police Department and to facilitate a partnership with the community.

Members of the Danville Police Department as well as guest instructors will conduct the Academy.

The multi-week program begins with a basic introduction to Constitutional law and the issues pertaining to the authority and limitations of law enforcement officers. Discussions will include “Search and Seizure”, “Use of Force”, “Juveniles”, “Domestic Violence Response” as well as criminal law, traffic violations and local ordinances.

Participants will be given the opportunity to test their understanding of the law in mock scenarios. Decision-making ability will be further tested with the Firearms Training Simulator (FATS) as students face real life lethal force situations via a life size computerized training system.

The course includes demonstrations of tools and resources available locally including investigative techniques for evidence collection and crime solving. Participants will be encouraged to do a ride-a-long with an officer on duty to see police work first hand.

In addition to a session dedicated to dispelling myths about law enforcement, a new session will be added titled “How not to be a victim”. Participants will be given instruction on personal protection as well how to make their homes and family safe.

The Danville Police Department believes the Citizens Academy will increase the community’s awareness and understanding of law enforcement capabilities (and limitations) thereby promoting more realistic expectations. It is also our belief that through a positive and informative median, a strong partnership will develop between members of the community and the Police Department to make Danville a safe environment in which to live and work.

The Citizen’s Academy is not intended for those desiring to become police officers. However, anyone interested in a career in law enforcement would benefit from this generalized view of policing.
